Waynesville, Donald Verlin Overbay, age 67, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
A native of Kingsport, Tennessee, he was the son of Roy Verlin Overbay of Kingsport, Tennessee and the late Marjorie Mae Goode Overbay. He earned his Bachelors Degree in Forestry from the University of Tennessee, was a plant manager for Georgia-Pacific and owned and operated Yield Lumber Company. He owned and operated the State Farm Insurance office in Waynesville for 25 years. Don earned a Charter Financial Consultant degree from the American College. Don was very involved in the community; he was a charter member and past president of the Sunrise Rotary Club, chairman of the Town of Waynesville Appearance Commission, member of the Chamber of Commerce and membership chairman for the AYSO. He coached youth baseball, basketball, softball, and soccer and was also past president of the Haywood County chapter of the American Red Cross. Don was a devoted and faithful Christian and member of the Body of Christ. He was a wonderful husband and father and a true and loyal friend.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife of 44 years, Stacy Overbay; two sons, Lt. Colonel Donald Andrew Overbay and his wife, Shelley, of Fairbanks, Alaska and Jon Patrick Overbay of Waynesville; one daughter, Allison O. Van Laningham and her husband, Brad, of Asheboro, NC; two brothers, Lyle Overbay and his wife, Judy Pat, of Sevierville, Tennessee and David Overbay and his wife, Annette, of Kingsport, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Robin Overbay of Boise, Idaho, and James and William Overbay of Fairbanks, Alaska; nieces and nephews, Drew Overbay and his wife, Heather, of Sevierville, Tennessee, Tia Babcock and her husband, Jonathon, of Knoxville, Tennessee, Heather Overbay and her husband, Adam, of Andersonville, Tennessee, and Jesse Overbay and his wife, Kristen, of Knoxville, Tennessee.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2010 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville and a Celebration of Don's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 27, 2010 in the Memorial Chapel of Lake Junaluska with the Reverend Jim Banks officiating. The family will also receive friends following the memorial service on Saturday. Private graveside services will be held at Emory Church Cemetery in Kingsport, Tennessee.
