KINGSPORT, Tenn. – At 7:00 PM on December 4, 2014, another Christian soldier marched into his heavenly home. The soul of Roy Verlin Overbay of Fall Creek Road peacefully left behind his 98 year and 10 month old body and entered into the Glory of his Savior, Jesus Christ.
He was preceded in his heavenly journey by his wife of 64 years, Marjorie Good Overbay who passed away on December 19, 2005, his eldest son, Donald Verlin Overbay, who passed away on February 24, 2010, his parents, Nora and Roy Overbay, and six brothers and four sisters.
He served in the Army Infantry in World War II and trained many men in weapons and combat skills before being sent to France shortly after D-Day as a 1st Lieutenant. He was seriously wounded at the battle of St. Lo and spent nearly a year recovering in hospitals in Great Britain and the U.S.
He worked at Eastman Kodak in Kingsport for nearly 40 years, retiring in 1977.
He became a Christian at an early age and served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, faithfully for most of his life in leadership positions at Emory United Methodist Church, Colonial Heights Baptist Church, and Tri-Cities Baptist Church where he was a charter member.
He also served in many charitable and civic organizations such as Ruritan National where he was a national director, Meals on Wheels, and Contact Concern where he had over 4000 hours of service. In 1989 he was honored as one of the Outstanding Persons of the Year by the Kingsport Times-News.
Survivors include his sister, Ruby Whaley of Kingsport, TN; daughter-in-law Stacy Overbay (wife of Don) of Waynesville , NC; son Lyle Overbay and wife Judy Pat of Sevierville, TN; and son David Overbay and wife Annette of Kingsport, TN.
Grandchildren; Lt. Col. (USAF retired) Andrew Overbay and wife Shelley of Baker, FL; Allison Overbay Van Laningham of Greensboro, NC; Jon and Catherine Overbay of Waynesville, NC; Drew and Heather Overbay of Sevierville, TN; Jonathan and Tia Overbay Babcock of Knoxville, TN; Adam and Heather Overbay Wright of Andersonville, TN; and Jesse and Kristen Overbay of Knoxville, TN.
Verlin is the great-grandfather of Robin Overbay, James Overbay, William Overbay, Jensen Overbay, Corbin Overbay, Kate Babcock, Claire Babcock, Samantha Wright, Ellie Wright, T.J. Wright, Jenna Overbay, Patrick Overbay, and the latest “Overbaby”, Parker, born on November 21.
His family sends heartfelt gratitude to the crew and management of Cracker Barrel on the Airport Parkway where he ate several times a week for the past several years. They were like his second family.
His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Ed Moody, Ed G. Moody, Kenny Taylor, Ronnie Taylor, and Jerry Taylor.
The family will receive friends at East Lawn Funeral Home from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM on Sunday, December 7. Worship and remembrances will follow at the funeral home at 2:30 PM. The burial service will be at Emory United Methodist Church Cemetery on Emory Church Road immediately following the worship service with military honors to be rendered by the American Legion Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #265.
The family will also receive friends at the home of David and Annette Overbay on Fall Creek Rd.
