Caswell Orton "Cas" Walker, 96, who rose from obscurity in the hills of Sevier County to become a political maverick and millionaire owner of a grocery store chain in three states, died in his sleep at 6:30 a.m. Friday at his Knoxville home.
Walker ... was as colorful as he was controversial. He was known widely across East Tennessee as well as the Southeast for his stores and radio and television shows.
Those shows launched some of the big names in country music, including Dolly Parton, also a native of Sevier County.
Although he became wealthy from a range of businesses, Walker despised the term "millionaire" and always preferred to be called "a common man."
After Cas Walker's death, Knoxville Mayor Victor Ashe ordered city flags to fly at half-staff in Walker's memory.
