John Osborne Cope Jr., (Jack), age 71, of Newport, died Friday, September 25, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center.
After having taught for 13 years Mr. Cope was retired from the Tennessee Department of Education. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newport, the Newport Lions Club, the Newport/Cocke County Economic Development Commission, the Cocke County Retired Teachers Association, the Iota Lamba Sigma of the University of Tennessee, and the Newport American Legion Post 41.
Mr. Cope was a former Mason, a former member of the Newport Amateur Photography Club, and was twice a past president of the Newport Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by a beloved son, John O. Cope III; his parents, J.O. and Maudella Cope, a brother, Charles Donald Cope, and a sister, Elizabeth Rosa Cope.
He is survived by his wife, Rita W. Cope, of the home; sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Rankin Little, of Manchester; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Alza Cope, of Knoxville and YJ and Dianne Cope, of Greeneville; nieces, Elizabeth Smith, Jerilyn Garner, and Cindy Brandan, all of Knoxville, Rebekah Hurst, of Manchester, Kathy Chandler and Nancy Green, both of Greeneville, Linda High, Brenda Hinkle, Wanda Roden, and Donna Hodges, all of Alabama, Amelia Williford, of White Pine, and Amanda Baker and Hanna Wheeling, both of Missouri; nephews, Paul, Jimmy, and David Cope, all of Knoxville, Tommy Cope, of Alabama, Chris Hudson and Donnie Williford, both of White Pine, and Andy Hudson, of Texas; several great-nieces and nephews; aunts, Bonnie Cope, of Andrews, NC and Jane Grubbs, of Doraville, GA; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Betty and Fred Williford, of White Pine; sisters-in-law and husbands, Ina and John Hudson, of Forth Worth, Texas and Barbara and Roy Rauls, of Belize, Central America; and brother-in-law and wife, Freddie and Pamela Williford, of White Pine.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, September 28, at the Costner-Maloy Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jim Lindsey officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery.
Jimmy Cope, Paul Cope, David Cope, Tommy Cope, Mark Robinson, and Bill Robinson will serve as pallbearers and members of the Newport Lions Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Costner-Maloy Funeral Home.
Costner-Maloy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
