Geneva D. Smith, age 83, went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 and was welcomed by those family and friends who had arrived before her.
Geneva was born in 1934 to Ray and Ida Belle Alderman and grew up in Orient Park, FL, a small community on the outskirts of Tampa. She had 3 brothers, Wiley, Charles and Terry (Vaness) Alderman and 3 sisters, Linda Stephens, Sandy (Isham) Houser and Karen (Alan) Knight, and they were raised among the orange trees, Papa’s garden and milk cows. It was a wonderful, innocent day. She and her best friend Doris, enjoyed life to the fullest and are best friends to this day. Mother and Doris will miss each other during this brief separation.
Geneva married a man (Del) who was larger than life and was a helpmate to him for 42 years of her life. He was a preacher, a sign painter and a writer of songs from all genres. She learned early on in her marriage to leave the door unlocked for the less fortunate, cook enough for the needy he would bring home for dinner - and clothe them before they left. Her home was also a haven for traveling evangelists and local ministers. She loved her children with a passion, especially her firstborn son whom his sisters refer to as “the chosen one”. Together, they raised their children on Lake Padgett in Florida where Geneva taught all three of her children and anyone else who was interested, how to water ski - though she, herself never took up the sport! Saturdays, Sundays and holidays she would really shine, feeding masses of family and friends some of the best meals known to man, and no one even fussed when they had to take their shoes off at the front door!
The next and last chapter of her life played out in the Great Smoky Mountains when Geneva and Del relocated their family to Sevier County, TN. It was in Sevier County where Geneva made her final earthly home and planted herself firmly in the First Baptist Church of Sevierville where she worshipped with her children, grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren. She loved singing in the Heaven Bound Senior Adult Choir and she loved getting to church very early to “catch up” with the ladies in her Sunday School class. Her faith and her family are her legacy, and can be witnessed in the lives of her children and their children, according to God’s Master Plan.
She leaves behind three children: a son, Butch Smith (Brenda) of Sevierville, TN, daughters Patti (Jeff) Spradley of Lake Park, GA and Tammy (Ray) Johnson of Sevierville, TN, 7 grandchildren, Misty (Kevin Hedrick), Summer (Paul Orr), Blue (Tabatha), Ashley (John Mays) and Lindsey, Lori and Grant Johnson, and 9 great-grandchildren, Lizi, Hudson, Immi, Ruth, Maggie, Jaiden, Jamison, Sawyer and Rayleigh Beth.
Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Special Friend’s Ministry, 317 Parkway, Sevierville, TN 37862
The family will receive friends 1-2:45 PM Saturday at First Baptist Church, Sevierville with her Celebration of Life following at 3 PM with Rev. Dan Spencer and Rev. Jerry Hyder officiating. Graveside Service will follow in River of Life Family Cemetery (at the end of Lonesome Valley Road behind The Apple Barn) with Rev. Randy Davis and Rev. Nelson Price officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be: Blue Smith, Ray Johnson, Jeff Spradley, Kevin Hedrick, John Mays and Paul Orr. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
