Valentines move on from Townsend fire
by Laura Long MartinSpecial to The Daily Times
Clive and Shelley Valentine of Deep Springs Settlement in Jefferson County are milling about this winter, but they aren't wasting time worrying about the past.
Clive Valentine is in the process of building a mill that will serve as the centerpiece of his new business next spring.
He hopes the new mill will stand the test of time.
Previously, the Valentines were in a partnership with Townsend businessman Gary Baker, and Clive Valentine set up a historic mill there, but it was burned down.
The structure was two weeks away from being insured, Clive Valentine said. The insurance company required the doors be installed on the mill, and he had not yet completed that work.
"That was two years ago in February,'' Shelley Valentine said. "We still haven't heard if there was enough evidence to prove arson against the ones who were apprehended, but I have put that chapter of our lives behind us.''
She said the burning of the mill in Townsend was a disappointment because the couple had been given "the Massengil Mill,'' a 207 year-old historic structure built the same year Tennessee became a state.
"It came from the Buffalo Springs community in Grainger County, and it was all overgrown with brush and the third floor was rotting out, but my husband thought he could make it operational so we moved it to Townsend,'' she said. "Our intention at that time was to build a living history museum centering on Cades Cove history.''
Two Maryville men were held in connection with the burning of the mill.
After the Massengil Mill burned, the Valentines later parted ways with Baker and decided to pursue their dream of creating a living history museum at the Deep Springs Settlement.
The site offers limited accommodations (three rental cabins) and seasonal events of craft demonstrations in period costume. The celebrations are open to the public.
Next May, Deep Springs Settlement will offer visitors a chance to see the new mill, and purchase old-fashioned grits or cornmeal made at the mill. Patrons can also enjoy music, a variety of delicious foods and meet and talk with crafters as they display their work and demonstrate their skills.
For now, the Valentines will be using the "down time'' of the winter months to finish construction on the new mill.
"My husband has a real talent for building and operating mills like this,'' said Shelley Valentine. "He loves doing it.''
Clive Valentine, a U.S. Army veteran, also spent eight years with the Tennessee National Guard, where he repaired medical equipment.
"Since I was a child, I have always had a passion for making machines like this work,'' he said.
With help from his father, Ashley Valentine, Clive Valentine said he plans to spend the next few months installing new wooden teeth for the drive gear that turns the stones, putting up siding and installing grain elevators.
The cast-iron drive gear was one of the pieces Clive Valentine was able to salvage from the Massengil Mill after it burned, and he brought the pieces to Deep Springs Settlement.
"They still work,'' Valentine said. "They made it through the fire and they are made to last.''
