• Notes

  Glen McMahan loved farming and started as a child when he was too small to lift the yoke over the oxens' head. At twelve he started plowing with a tractor. He and his brother, Wilbur, were the first farmers in Sevier County to raise red burley tobacco. In 1939 he bought the first wheat combine in Sevier County. Upon receiving a degree in agriculture from the University of Tennessee in 1931, Glenn began a long career as a county agricultural and civic leader. He helped organize the Soil Conservation District of Sevier County and served as supervisor and president during the years 1954-1963. He helped organize the Sevier Farmers Co-op and served as one of the first directors as well as Vice-president. He served on the County Court Argiculture Committee and the Farm and Home Loan Association Committee. Glen served as a director of the Sevier County Farm Bureau for 25 years and as president from 1948-1950 and 1957-1971. He helped organize the Sevier County Pig Sale, and was the first bookkeeper ---------- Reference: Rosa Lee Downey notes, 16 June 1983, p 46.
