Merritt, Arless C. – age 80 of Strawberry Plains went to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, June 25, 2012. Retiree of Rohm & Haas Chemical Company where he also served on the Board of Directors for the Credit Union. He was a longtime member, deacon, and trustee of Thorn Grove Baptist Church where he was also the Junior Boys Sunday School teacher for many years. Also, a member of the French Broad Masonic Lodge 588 F&AM, and a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner. He was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean Conflict and playing football for the US Army team. He was an avid UT football fan and served as Chairman of Thorn Grove Cemetery. Preceded in death by parents, Clarence and Georgie Merritt. Survived by loving wife of 55 years, Shirley Atchley Merritt; brothers, Ronald Merritt and wife Lorene, and Phillip Merritt and wife Marvin; brother-in-law, Tom Atchley and wife Peggy; sister-in-law, Joyce Deaton; nieces and nephews, Randy Merritt, David Merritt, Carol and Steve Griffin, Sr., Stephen Griffin, Kevin Griffin, Sonja Corvette, Brittany Arnett, Megan Merritt, Cheri Bell, Emily Stanton, and Janice Cox. Special thanks to Dr. Wahid Hanna and staff at UT, and Tenova Hospice of Halls. Funeral services will be 7:00 PM, Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at Thorn Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Tatum and Dr. Ted Padgett officiating. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 AM on Thursday at Thorn Grove Cemetery for a 10:00 AM interment. Pallbearers will be former members of the Junior Boys Sunday School Class. Military honors will be provided by East TN Veteran Honor Guard. Donations may be made to Thorn Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 10200 Thorngrove Pike, Strawberry Plains, TN 37871. The family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday at Thorn Grove Baptist Church. Arrangements by Bridges Funeral Home, 5430 Rutledge Pike, 865-523-4999.
