John B. Ottinger , 83, of Poplar Springs Road, Greeneville, passed away Saturday morning, December 28, 2002 at Takoma Adventist Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Ottinger was born February 22, 1919 in Parrottsville and was a lifelong dairy farmer.
He was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church, serving on the Council and many committees. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served in the First Marine Division in WWII in the Pacific Theatre and fought at Guadacanal and Solomon Islands.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Kiker Ottinger ; son and daughter-in-law, Johnny C. and Dorothy L. Ottinger , of Greeneville; two grandsons and one granddaughter-in-law: John Ottinger , Jake and Jennifer Ottinger , all of Greeneville; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Willis and Mary Dee Ottinger , Trent and Mary Ottinger , all of Parrottsville; two sisters and one brother-in-law: Charlsie O. Hawk, Charles and Joan Birdwell, of Johnson City; several nieces and nephews.
He was a dedicated, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was the son of the late Charlie and Bessie Bowers Ottinger , of Parrottsville, and was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Ottinger , of Greeneville, and two sisters, Luster LaFollette and Blanche Ottinger , of Parrottsville.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church, Parrottsville, with Pastor Kathleen Yates officiating.
Interment will be in the church cemetery. Greeneville V.F.W. Post No. 1990 and American Legion Post No. 64 will conduct a military graveside service.
Pallbearers will be Allen Ottinger , Robert Ottinger , Dallas Ottinger , Charlie Birdwell, Teddy Clowers, and Martin Kiker.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Salem Lutheran Church Adult Sunday School Class, Dr. James McKinney, Dr. W. Robert Bridges, Dr. A.K. Sen, the third floor nursing staff of Takoma Adventist Hospital, Anthony Sauceman, and Captain Robbie Hawkins.
The body is at Kiser Funeral Home where it will remain until time to be taken to the church 30 minutes preceding the services. The family received friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
