Dorothy Doak Holder, age 91, of Parrottsville, died Saturday, February 21, 2015 at her home. Mrs. Holder graduated from Cocke County High School in 1940. She then began her studies at Mississippi State College for women and transferred to Stephens College where she graduated with an Associates of Arts Degree in 1942. She earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Education from the University of Tennessee in 1944. She taught one year at Parrottsville High School before transferring to Cocke County High School where she taught English for twenty-one more years. In 1966 she received a grant and returned to the University of Tennessee to gain her certification in Special Education and Home Bound teaching, and spent fourteen years covering Cocke County like the dew. She retired in 1980. She served as supervisor of Adult Basic Education for five years, then retired fully in 1990. Mrs. Holder was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Knoxville. She attended Newport Presbyterian Church for over twenty-three years, working with the young people. She then attended Harned’s Chapel United Methodist Church for over twenty-five years. She was a member of Alpha Omega Pi Sorority during her time at U.T. She was also a member of National Education Association, Tennessee Education Association, and Cocke County Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma society for the women educators for fifty years, serving as president and traveling to Guatemala to establish a new chapter during this time. She spent over thirty years as a member of Newport Music Club and Clifton Club. Mrs. Holder married John C. Holder, Jr on June 7, 1947. She and John enjoyed traveling across the country together. She also traveled with her friends from Central America to Panama; toured London; went on a Safari in Kenya, attended several conventions with Delta Kappa Gamma and Adult Basic Education. She especially loved her yearly vacations with her family She was preceded in death by her husband John C Holder, Jr; father, Dr. Samuel Dorsey LyKins; mother and adopted father, Gretchen and Dr. Maurice Stewart Doak; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary Edith and John C. Holder Sr.; and sister-in-law, Barbara Bailey. She is survived by her sons, John Stewart Holder of Parrottsville and Ben Holder of Newport; daughter, Pamela and Randy Dalton of Parrottsville; granddaughters, Heather Dalton of Parrottsville, and Stacie and Dustin Cook of Cleveland, TN; great-granddaughter, Caroline Cook of Cleveland, TN; cousins, Capt. Sam and Emily Doak of Greeneville, TN, Rosemary and Martin Hill of Norfolk, VA, and Wendall and Linda Stoltz of Memphis, TN, aunt, Margaret Smith, cousin, Diane L. Bailey and her extended family Marie Davis of Newport, her daughter, Jeannie and Mike Lane and their children, Samantha and Bradley Lane all of Parrottsville. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, February 24, 2015 in Union Cemetery, with Rev. Don Jones officiating. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to the Susan G.
