Ed "Britches" Montgomery, age 88 of Gatlinburg, Tennessee passed away Sunday, May 25, 2014. He was born in Knoxville, TN on February 28, 1926, played youth basketball at the Knoxville YMCA, and graduated from Knoxville High School in 1944 where he played both football and basketball.
He served in World War II as an officer in the US Merchant Marine 1944-1946.
Mr. Montgomery attended the University of Tennessee from 1946-1950 where he played basketball. Mr. Montgomery started and lettered as a shooting guard each year he played varsity. He was named All SEC in 1950 and held the highest single game scoring record (36 points) for several years for the Vols. While the Detroit Pistons drafted him into National Basketball Association in 1950, "Britches" elected to pursue business interests instead of venturing into the recently created pro league.
He worked in the insurance business until moving to Gatlinburg from Johnson City in the mid 1960's having worked for Bennett and Edwards Insurance Company in the Tri-Cities, the company who first owned and developed Chalet Village. Montgomery was moved to Gatlinburg as Vice President of Sales and Development and was instrumental and responsible for the development of Chalet Village until Aetna Insurance Company purchased it from Bennett and Edwards in the 1970's. After a year in the corporate world, Montgomery went on to broker several real estate businesses in the area, eventually retiring from Gatlinburg Real Estate and Rentals, Inc , the company that he and his wife Bobbi Montgomery owned.
Mr. Montgomery was an avid golfer, playing for many years at Gatlinburg Country Club where he was a Club Champion in the late 1970's. In 1987, "Britches" was inducted into the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame. He was also later nominated to be on the University of Tennessee All Century Basketball Team.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Clarence and Elsie Garland Montgomery; son, Thomas McConnell Montgomery; sister and brother-in-law, Park and Evelyn Montgomery Connelly.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 25 years, Bobbi Ann Guinn Montgomery; children, Cyndy Montgomery Reeves, Robert Wallace Montgomery; grandchildren, Joseph David Reeves, Jr., Jesse and Jenney Reeves Perloff, James Marshall and Rebekah Edwards Reeves, II, Stephen and Iris Reeves Ramsey, Heather Marie Montgomery, Marlee McConnell Montgomery, Monica McClain Montgomery; great-grandchildren, Jazlyn Iris Perloff, Jenesis Rose Perloff, Janessa Shel Perloff, Briana Phillips, Gabriella June Reeves and Knox Edward Ramsey; step-children, Dwain Doyle and Lisa Dixon, II, David Marlin and Elizabeth Dixon; step-grandchildren, Emma Martin, Sophie Martin, Brittanee Ann Dixon, Connor Ryan Dixon, Wynn Martin, Xristina Elizabeth Dixon, Kathryn Ann Dixon, Very special friend and caregiver Freda Parton.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Knoxville or the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
Memorial service 2 PM Wednesday, May 28th at Trinity Episcopal Church in Gatlinburg with Father Charles Livermore officiating. A reception with family will follow the service in the Parish Hall. Cremation arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville. (www.atchleyfuneralhome.com)
