Vonn Ray Murrell of Newport left this life peacefully Wednesday, February 25, 2015 surrounded by his family. Mr. Murrell was born in Newport on March 1, 1938. He graduated from Cocke County High School in 1956 and from Carson Newman College in 1960. As a young man he served in the Air National Guard. At sixteen he became an avid ham radio operator and was known by the ham community throughout Tennessee and across the country by call sign K4HHA. Always interested in technology Mr. Murrell was instrumental in developing the television ministry at First Baptist Church of Newport. He began working as purchasing manager at Electro-Voice in 1964 and in retirement enjoyed road trips on his Gold Wing motorcycle and geocaching with his wife and family. He also served as treasurer, trustee, and deacon of First Baptist Church where he was a lifelong member. Mr. Murrell was preceded in death by his parents Conn and Estalena Williams Murrell and aunt Ada Rutledge. Left to treasure his memory are his wife of more than 50 years Hazel Belcher Murrell, children Lisa and Rob Myers, David and Shawna Coggins Murrell, and Amy and Joey Bradshaw, grandchildren Beth Murrell, Jonathan Bradshaw, and Sarah Bradshaw, beloved extended family and countless friends. The family will receive friends Sunday, March 1, 2015 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, at Manes Funeral Home in Newport. A celebration of his life will follow at 7:00 pm. Burial will take place Monday at 1:00 pm in Union Cemetery. Dr. Rich Lloyd and Rob Myers will officiate. Honorary pallbearers are the First Baptist Church Television Ministry crew. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund. The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Newport Health and Rehab and Tennova Newport Medical Center for the care they gave Vonn Ray.
