Frankie Louise Newman Oury, age 94, of Pigeon Forge, passed away Monday, August 23, 2004. She was born on November 8, 1909, to West and Nettie Benson Newman. Her mother died when Frankie was an infant, and as promised to Nettie, Frankie was raised by her grandparents Prosser and Ellen Benson. She grew up in Pigeon Forge, with sister, Cora Benson, and brothers, Walter and Bates Benson. She married Ed “Sailor Clark” Oury in 1928. They resided in Detroit, Michigan; Gatlinburg, Tennessee, where Ed was one of the first policemen; San Jose and San Diego, California; and several locations in Pigeon Forge, Frankie’s true home. From 1965 to 1989 Frankie was employed by the Sevier County School System at Pigeon Forge Elementary, where many children and coworkers were touched by her kindness. She provided needed physical nourishment as well as emotional encouragement. She gave unselfishly and loved unconditionally family, friends, and always children. Frankie “paddled her own canoe” and helped many others keep theirs afloat. She enjoyed her coffee and talking into the late hours with family and friends at her home. She was an avid reader and grew beautiful flowers.
Frankie was preceded in death by sisters, Pauline Stinnett, Grace Etherton, and Blanche McCarter; brother, Pless Newman; husband, Ed Oury; and sons, Jack Oury and Eddie Oury.
She is survived by:

Frankie, Mama, Nanny, you will live on in heaven and continue to bless our lives. Jenean, Leah, and Mariah will especially miss you. You were always there for us, shielding us from life’s storms. You were the light of Jane’s life, Robert will always be your little boy, and Dot has your compassionate spirit. You were the best mama, grandmother, and friend. Jesus’ light lived in you. You made the world a better place.
Funeral service 7 PM Thursday in the Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Robert E. Settle and Rev. Bill Maples officiating. Interment 11 AM Friday in First Baptist Church Cemetery in Pigeon Forge. Pallbearers will be: John Oury, Paul Oury, Bob Bradley, Larry Brackins, Larry Stinnett, Joe Sarten, West Newman, Joe Newman, Johnny Wilson, Don Ward, Robert Grubb, and David McNabb. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Thursday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville. Please come as you are. Mama would welcome you. (www.atchleyfuneralhome.com)
