Bates, Sybil Hines – age 87 of Knoxville died peacefully Monday, March 30, 2009, at Ridgeview Terrace of Lifecare in Rutledge, TN. She was a member of Lyons Creek Baptist Church and Mascot Chapter 55 O.E.S. She grew up and lived her life in the Carter Community of Knoxville. Most recently she enjoyed “almost” two years of fellowship with residents of Ridgeview Terrace. We thank the entire staff for making that possible. She enjoyed traveling, reading, and playing the piano. She was a loving mother, granny, sister, and friend. Sybil is preceded in death by husband, Bruce E. Bates; infant son, Albert; parents, Paul and Mae Walker Hines; and son-in-law, Ronald F. Witt. She is survived by children, James (Ginger) Bates, Charlotte (Steve) Swaggerty, Robert “Bob” (June) Bates, Judy (David) Hayes, and Barbara Witt; and sister, Wilma Hines McMillan. She was blessed with 15 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 4 great, great grandchildren. Funeral services will be 7:00 PM Thursday, April 2, 2009, at Lyons Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Witt and Rev. Matt Giles officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10:30 AM Friday at Lyons Creek Baptist Church and proceed to Pleasant Hill Cemetery for an 11:00 AM graveside service. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lyons Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 9235 Strawberry Plains Pike, Strawberry Plains, TN 37871. The family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 PM Thursday at Lyons Creek Baptist Church. Arrangements by Bridges Funeral Home, 5430 Rutledge Pike, 865-523-4999.
