Her trademark was dinner finger bowls.
"She did everything properly," said David Duncan of Martha Henderson Ashe . "We always talked about social things. We compared notes, and we had the same opinions on declining social graces."
Duncan, a longtime chef and caterer, remembered the late Mrs. Ashe as a special woman Wednesday during a visitation hosted by her family.
U.S. Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe and other family members, including brother, Lawrence, sister-in-law, Kathy, niece, Sally Ashe Wood, and nephew, Robbie, received friends at the former Knoxville mayor's Kingston Pike home.
Mrs. Ashe died Friday in Florida after a lengthy illness, said granddaughter Sally Ashe Wood, who was at her bedside. She was 91.
She was a businesswoman, churchgoer and political figure, becoming the first woman in 1974 to be elected to the state Senate from Knox County and the first Republican woman elected anywhere in Tennessee to the Senate.
More than 200 people filed through the Ashe family's landscaped garden Wednesday to pay their respects. They included Sen. Lamar Alexander, former Knoxville Mayor Randy Tyree, Tennessee Valley Authority Director Bill Baxter, retiring Knoxville Fire Chief Eddie Cureton, University of Tennessee President John Petersen and a host of past and present City Council members.
"It's very heartwarming to have so many friends come," said Ashe , who served four terms as Knoxville mayor.
His wife, Joan, and children, J. Victor and Martha, remained in Poland and won't be attending Mrs. Ashe 's funeral, which will be held at 10 a.m. today at Central Baptist Church of Bearden.
They said their goodbyes to Mrs. Ashe before they left for Poland, Ashe said, because they thought it might be the last time they would see her.
Of his mother, Ashe said, "She was born before her time. She raised the glass ceiling and at times busted it."
