Barbara Holder Hargrave Bailey, of Kingsport, Tennessee and more recently Boulder, Colorado, has died after a wonderful, fulfilling and happy life full of family, friends and her church.
Barbara was born in Newport, Tennessee to John C. Holder, Sr. and Mary Edith Holder. After graduating from the University of Tennessee in 1949, she travelled west and took a teaching job in Coos Bay, Oregon. She spent a year there and fell in love with the people and land of Oregon, but her love for her Tennessee family was stronger.
She returned to the volunteer state, settling in Kingsport where she became a PE teacher at Dobyn's Bennett High School. It was in Kingsport where she met and married Rawlings Hargrave who worked for Tennessee Eastman.
Soon after marrying, they moved to Tarrytown, NY, for Rawlings to work with Eastman Chemicals in New York City. They shared a wonderful home in Croton-on-Hudson NY and welcomed their treasured three daughters. The family lived there until Rawlings died in 1964 at which time Barbara and her daughters returned to Kingsport.
While raising her girls, Barbara went back to school and received her Masters in Guidance and Counseling from East Tennessee State University. She spent five years as a counselor at Tennessee High in Bristol, then returned to Dobyn's Bennett and served as a counselor from 1976 and until she retired in 1992.
Barbara married Richard F. Bailey in 1972 and they were married for nearly 35 years. "Dick" preceded her in death in 2007. Also preceding her in death were her parents, John C. Holder and Mary Edith Holder; her brother, John C. Holder, Jr. and her step-daughter, JoAnna Bailey Weaver.
Surviving are her daughters, Deborah Hargrave Hauck and her husband, Rex of Lafayette, CO, Teresa Hargrave and her husband, Tony Daloisio of Washington Depot, CT and Atlanta, GA, Barbara Hargrave Edwards and her husband, Ian of Boulder CO; her step-children, Pat Bailey of Los Angeles, CA, Jerry Bailey Eppinga and her husband, Ernie of Delano, TN and Gary Bailey and his wife, Betty of Kingsport, TN. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Holder of Newport; her grandchildren, Dylan and Laurel Hauck, Timothy and Morgan Daloisio, Gavin Edwards, Rick and Becky Hendrix, Susan Hendrix Curry, Serge Berkley, Andy, Tracy and Brad Reiman, several great grandchildren, and many dear nieces and nephews.
To say that Barbara’s impact on people was profound, would be an understatement. Her sense of humor, warm outgoing nature and sincere deep wisdom inspired all those around her. Barbara’s philosophy of life included the belief in choosing hope and focusing on the positive when faced with challenges or adversity. She believed in the innate goodness of people and consistently looked for ways to serve her family and community. Although she will be deeply missed, she has left a legacy of love.
Receiving of friends and a reception will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church after the memorial service on June 7, 2014 at 4:00pm. A private, family burial will be in Newport TN.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her beloved St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 161 E. Ravine, Kingsport, TN 37660.
