The following article about the Newport High School Class of 1912 was written by the late Miss Mary Rowe Ruble, a member of the class, longtime Cocke County teacher, and, for many years, Cocke County Historian.
At this season of the year high school commencement programs stir memories of the past. The Class of 1912 of Newport High School graduated on May 17th. Commencement exercises were held in the upper room of the Court House. Each member of the class appeared on the program and recited an original essay. These essays were on varied subjects: moral issues, beauties of nature, character building, and current topics. Among these were The Sinking of the Titanic and a Tribute to Robert Love Taylor. After each graduate had completed his or her recitation, beautiful gift flowers were brought to the stage by pretty little girls. The program closed by the group singing an appropriate song—the words were composed by the members and were sung to a familiar tune. Diplomas were then distributed by a member of the County Board of Education and the graduates were congratulated by their beloved teacher, Prof. Ed Moore of Russellville, Tennessee. The day had finally come that they had looked forward to for three years but now they were sad at parting. The high school at that time had only a three-year course and two teachers. Prof. R. P. Driskill taught the ninth grade and Prof. Moore the tenth and eleventh.
While this class has never had a formal reunion, they have kept up with each other and continue their friendships. Those living at this time are John C. Holder, Newport; Chester Glenn, North Carolina; Lucy Boyer Caldwell, North Carolina; Claudia Holder Nease, Newport; Mary Alexander Rickard and Alma Ailey Montsinger, Knoxville; Arlie Burke Carter, Maryville; Eunice Boyer Susong, Newport; Letha Burke DeBusk, Greeneville; Mary Rowe Ruble and Edith Balch Hodge, Newport; and Hattie Clevenger, Burnsville, North Carolina.
