EDWINA—A dispute over the shooting of fireworks Wednesday night has resulted in the death of a South Carolina man.
According to Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes and Sgt. Bob Shaff, the victim is identified as 20-year-old Caleb J. Storie . Shaff said Storie lived in South Carolina but was originally from Newport and was visiting at the time of the incident.
The shooter has been identified as Gary L. Hurley, 52, of Chicken Hollow Road.
"It started around 10 p.m.," said Fontes. "Hurley became angry because neighbors were shooting off fireworks. He confronted the individuals and an argument broke out. It then developed into a physical altercation between Hurley and Storie . During the altercation, two gunshots were heard by witnesses. Based on witness statements, Hurley was in possession of the firearm."
According to Shaff's report, Storie was shot twice in the chest with a Highpoint 9 mm handgun. The victim died at the scene.
Fontes said no charges have been filed at this time. He said Hurley is claiming self defense in the shooting and that no charges will be considered until all information and evidence is gathered.
He said the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called in to help with the investigation.
"The TBI is assisting in collecting evidence and once we have everything it will be presented to a grand jury," Fontes said.

Caleb J. Storie - Sheriff: Evidence from fatal shooting being processed
EDWINA—Evidence at the crime scene of a fatal shooting over a dispute over fireworks on Wednesday, July 8, is being processed by investigators, Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes stated on Friday, July 10.
The victim in the shooting is Caleb J. Storie , 20, of Conway, S.C. The shooter has been identified as Gary L. Hurley, 52, of Chicken Hollow Road, according to a CCSD report by Sgt. Bob Schaff.
Hurley said the two shots fired during a physical altercation with Storie were fired in self-defense, Schaff reported. Storie was shot twice in the chest with a Highpoint 9 mm handgun, and died at the scene, the CCSD reported.
The sheriff stated on Friday, July 17, "Evidence is being processed, and statements have been taken. All information, once processed, will be presented to the district attorney's office for a determination to present before a grand jury."
No charges had been filed, as of Friday, July 17.
Officers were dispatched to 906 Chicken Hollow Road on a shooting call at about 10:20 p.m., Sgt. Schaff stated in his report.
Upon arrival, Storie was found deceased by two gun shot wounds in his chest.
A verbal argument between Storie and Hurley, who are neighbors, allegedly escalated and led into a physical altercation, the report stated.
The physical altercation allegedly escalated, as well, leading to Hurley shooting Storie with a 9 mm handgun, Sgt. Schaff stated.
Hurley, along with his wife, Stella, and son, Evan, reportedly walked toward Storie 's residence and then confronted their neighbors who were having a party and lighting fireworks, according to the report.
The physical altercation that ensued allegedly included Gary Hurley, Stella Hurley, and neighbors Shanda Storie , her boyfriend Archie Lumbert, and son Caleb Stories, who was shot.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) was contacted and arrived on the scene to assist the Cocke County Sheriff's Department in its investigation, Sgt. Schaff reported.
Charges are pending upon further investigation, the report stated.
Sgt. Schaff reported that the shooting victim, Caleb Storie , lived in South Carolina, but was originally from Newport and was visiting at the time of the shooting.
