A TVA lineman was killed Friday morning while working high up on a tower off Butchers Valley Road. Kasee J. Cope , 27 of Greenback, TN, was the victim of an electric shock, according to TVA spokesman, John Molton.
"He was electrocuted while doing some modifications on a high voltage line on TVA right-of-way. TVA has assembled a team to investigate the exact cause of the accident. We know it was electrical contact, but we'll have to look into how it happened," Molton said.
The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. Hawkins County EMS arrived on the scene minutes after the call came in. "The TVA crew was in the process of getting him down when we got there," said Lynn Weston, paramedic with Hawkins County EMS.
"It took about 40 minutes to get him down because he was all the way at the top of a 120-foot tower about a half-mile off the roadway," he said.
Weston said Cope was wearing a safety harness and climbing gear. Rescuers had to hook to Cope 's harness to bring him down.
"There was nothing medically that could be done for him at that point," Weston said.
Although Cope was working on an inactive line, Weston said the line may have picked up a static charge from nearby high-voltage transmission lines.
"Those lines deal with so much voltage they can pick up a lot of static electricity. Apparently, that's what he came in contact with," he said. It is uncertain the amount of voltage with which Cope came in contact.
Weston said Cope was dead at the scene and was pronounced dead at Hawkins County Memorial Hospital.
Cope had been with TVA for more than four years as an employee in transmission line construction.
He is survived by his wife, Leslie, daughter, Jessica and several relatives of Greenback, Maryville and Chattanooga. A memorial service was held in Greenback Monday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Jessica Cope Trust Fund, Union Planters Bank, P.O. Box 2, Greenback TN, 37742.
