Delmar Ray Townsend, age 81, went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, November 29, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was a member of First Red Bank Baptist Church in Sevierville, TN. Delmar loved fishing, enjoyed gardening, and watching and feeding the birds, squirrels and chipmunks. He always greeted you with “Howdy, how are you”? He was preceded in death by his parents Dowe and Maude Townsend; father-in-law, John McKay; mother-in-law, Georgia McKay Sanders; sister Faye Townsend King and brothers Wade George Townsend and David “Plug” Townsend; sisters-in-law Dell Cogdill Townsend, Shirley Clabo McKay and Louise McKay Oakley, Betty McKay Ogle; brothers-in-law Wayne Oakley and Carroll King; nephews Bryan McKay, Mike Townsend and wife Chrystal.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Dorothy “Dot” McKay Townsend; son, Johnny Ray Townsend and wife Diane; daughter, Janet Townsend Whaley and husband Mark, all of Gatlinburg, TN. He was blessed with three grandchildren, Jason Ray Townsend (Misty) of Kodak, TN, Leanne Townsend David (Reed) of Eagle, CO and Christopher James Whaley of Gatlinburg, TN. He was also blessed with five great-grandchildren, Brody Ray Townsend and Braxton Cole Townsend of Kodak, TN, Annalee Marie David, Aspen Bryce David and Titus Reed David, all of Eagle, CO.
He will be missed greatly by his sister, Bea Barnes (Claude); brother-in-law, John Robert “Bob” McKay; sister-in-law, Peggy McKay Holland and several nieces and nephews. Special friends were John and Margaret Leo, Robert Branan and the late Dorothy Branan, Carolyn Merritt and the late Bill Merritt, Jim and Margaret Whaley. Special thanks to caregivers Ricky Ford, the late Ann McMahan and UT Hospice Services.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Red Bank Baptist Church, 2120 Summerfield Lane, Sevierville, TN 37876, or the local chapter of Alzheimer’s Tennessee, 5801 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919.
The family will receive friends 4-6 PM Friday, December 1, 2017, with funeral service to follow at 6 PM in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville. Pastors Bobby Owens, Chris Barnes and Jeff Ownby will officiate. Interment will be 11 AM Saturday, December 2, 2017, in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens, Pigeon Forge. Pallbearers will be Jason Townsend, Christopher Whaley, Randall Oakley, Doug McKay, Lin Stinson and Chris Barnes. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Townsend, Mark Whaley, Bob McKay, Claude Barnes, Gary French, Ricky Ball, Freddie Mikels and Joe Cordell.
