Estel Taft Wilson, born October 25, 1912, to Clay and Margaret Wilson, died on February 23, 2004, at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee.
He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during WWII driving the Red Ball Express which kept supplies to General Patton's forces as they thrust into the heart of Germany and rushed to assist at the Battle of the Bulge.
After his military service, he became a carpenter and a Baptist minister, pastoring Union Grove, Maple Springs, and Shady Grove Baptist churches near Tellico Plains, Tenn., and Union Baptist Church near Newport, Tenn. He also was an avid trout fisherman and was an expert in fly fishing.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Beulah Norris Wilson, and five children and spouses: Clifford and Sue Curtis Wilson, A.C. and Doris Martin Wilson, Robert T. and Suzanne Burnette Wilson, all of Tellico Plains, Tenn.; Jerry P. and Jan Hawk Wilson, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and Marilyn Wilson Daniels and Estel Daniels, of Newport, TN; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Conway and Estelee Wilson, Eual and Maudella Wilson, of Newport, Tenn.
He is also survived by ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and "three unofficially adopted daughters" Denise Carrell, of Newport, and Brenda Arrowood and Marilyn Bryant, of Cosby, and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 til 8 p.m. at the Manes Funeral Chapel with funeral services to follow.
The family and friends will gather from 12 noon til 2 p.m. Thursday, February 26, 2004, at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Tellico Plains, with graveside services to follow at the Shady Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Hubachek and the Rev. R.L. Davis officiating.
For those who wish, memorials may be made to Union Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member.
