Mr. William "Bill" Ervin Metcalf, 72, a resident of Chapel Dr. in Thomasville died Thursday, February 19, 2009 at Thomasville Medical Center.
Bill was born March 1, 1936 in Newport, Tennessee (Cocke County) a son of Roy and Glennie Johnson Metcalf. He has lived in the Davidson County area for the past 35 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and attended Rich Fork Baptist Church. Bill was an avid Hi Toms fan and coached many youth baseball teams. Along with his wife Nellie, he volunteered at Thomasville Medical Center and he was the founder of the Transportation Cart Program at the hospital and also served as a driver. Bill was a baker for 37 years and retired from Tasty Bakery in Thomasville where he baked the "Best Donuts ever".
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Arlene Davis and a granddaughter, Miranda Metcalf.
On November 18, 1958 he married Nellie Brady who survives of the home.
Also surviving is his daughter, Tammy Gailey and husband Joe of Thomasville; two sons, Tim Metcalf and wife Lori and Terry Metcalf and wife Dawn all of Thomasville; one sister, Louise Reeves of Greeneville, Tenn.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, February 22, 2009 at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Michael Bowers officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
