John worked 10 years at the University of Tennessee College of Law and retired after 30 years at Oak Ridge Y-12 Union Carbine. John is preceded in death by his wife Dixie Galyon McNelly; step-daughter Brenda Maynard; parents Bruce and Donna Tipton McNelly; step-mother Mima McNelly; brother J.B. McNelly; sisters Mildred Davis and Juanita Stookbury. John is survived by his daughters, Joann Gibson, Janie Galyon, Nancy Hodges, and Eula Stinnett; sons in law, Roy Hodges Jr., James “Rod” Lewelling, and Gary Shular; grandchildren, Joshua Gibson, Ronnie Stinnett, Roy J. Hodges III, and Charles Hodges; great-grandchildren, Korbin Gibson, Sarah Smith, Macey, Bishop Grace, JJ, and Liam Hodges; sister in law, Georgie Mae Kelly; several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and special little dog CoCo. The family wishes to thank U.T. Hospice nurse Gina for all the love, support, and care and the U.T. staff. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Friday with funeral service to follow at 7 PM in the East Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Benny Flynn and Rev. Ronnie Reagan officiating. A procession will leave Atchley Funeral Home at 11:30 AM Saturday to Dupont Cemetery for graveside service and interment.
