Sue Ogle Garst, born in 1930 in Maryville TN, died peacefully at her Alcoa TN home on Wednesday, November 13th. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, James A Garst, parents Abe and Tressie Ogle, brother Lawrence Ogle and sister Marie Grayson. Survivors include her four children: Brenda Rucker of Alcoa, Janie Conner of Dayton OH, Jean Kelly of Louisville TN and James (Mary) Garst of Seymour TN; sisters Dean Peterson of Alcoa, Eva Ogle of Knoxville, Carolyn Davis of California, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and good friends Sara Webb and Nancy Morris. Sue was an avid gardener of flowers and vegetables. A talented cook, she loved making meals for her family and anyone who was hungry using her garden's bounty. She was instrumental in founding The Food Connection and volunteered there for many years. She was a talented quilt maker, and her many quilts will serve as lasting symbols of her love for her family. Sue loved sports of all kinds and was a gifted member of the Walland High Basketball League during the 1940's where she played guard. You could always find her at her grandchildren's sporting events cheering them on. She also enjoyed watching UT football and was a loyal supporter of the Lady Vols, often traveling to Final Four tournaments. An Air Force wife for 27 years, Sue frequently spoke about her many travels and experiences, although she was most happy to be back in her Smoky Mountain home. Sue was a member of St. Marks Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Friday, November 15, 2013 at Smith Trinity Chapel from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. Family and friends will assemble for interment at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Grandview Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Marks Methodist Church, The Food Connection or Blount Memorial Hospice.
