Jason Clifford Smith: Firefighter dies in tragic accident
BYBEE—A very well respected volunteer firefighter with the Centerview Volunteer Fire Department died in a tragic accident at his Bybee residence, on Saturday, Nov. 8, the Cocke County Sheriff's Department reported.
Jason Clifford Smith, 34, Glendale Road, Bybee was apparently working on the driveshaft in his Ford pickup truck when, at 11:15 p.m., a tire on the truck rolled on top of him, pinning him under the vehicle, Deputy Sheriff Zach Shelton reported.
His wife, Betty Burns Smith, said her husband was working on the driveshaft while she went inside their residence for a few minutes, the report stated.
She said when she came back outside to help her husband work on the truck, she heard him say, "The truck is rolling."
Betty Smith said when her husband said that, she went to help and discovered then that he was pinned underneath the tire. She said she checked to see if he was breathing, but he was not. She then called 911.
Shelton reported that he arrived and found Jason Smith under the left front tire of the pickup truck. He said he immediately checked Smith to see if he was breathing, which he wasn't, or had a pulse, which he did not.
Shelton, members of the Centerview Volunteer Fire Department, and the Newport Rescue Squad began efforts to free Smith from underneath the truck, the report stated.
The death of Jason Smith was ruled accidental. Det. Jason Oury responded to the scene, while K9 Sgt. Chris Gregg took photos of it.
On Monday, Nov. 10, Centerview Volunteer Fire Chief Larry Holt spoke highly of Smith and said, "He's going to be greatly missed."
Holt said Jason Smith started as a volunteer firefighter for the CVFD in March 2012. Holt said Smith went to the area fire school, and then the state fire school, which was a demonstration of his determined character. He worked his way up to lieutenant.
Said the fire chief, "Everybody's taking it kind of rough," since Smith's unexpected death. He also said that since Smith's death, "We spent a lot of time with (his) family. It's been busy the last 48 hours."
Jason and his wife Betty Burns had their own cleaning business. Chief Holt also said Smith did roofing and remodeling work. "He was a handyman," Holt stated.
"He was always willing to help anybody," the fire chief stated.
Jason Smith was a dedicated fireman, Holt and other firefighters stated.
Justin Shelton, of the Cocke County Fire Department, said, "That was a real man. He was one of the bravest firemen I've ever met. (Jason Smith and his family) are good people. They'd give you the shirts off their backs, if necessary.
Shelton continued, "He was very courageous. He was a great guy. He always had your back."
Besides his wife, Jason Smith is survived by a daughter, Chelsea Burns, a freshman at Cocke County High School, and a son, Ely Smith.
The family will receive visitors at Manes Funeral Home on Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 5-8 p.m. The funeral service is Thursday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m. The procession will be from Manes Funeral to Glendale Cemetery on Glendale Road.
