BYERS, WAYNE CLAUDE - age 88, of Virginia Beach, formerly of Knoxville, went to be with the Lord on October 29, 2013. Wayne was born in Neubert Springs in Knoxville, TN, where he lived most of his life. Truly a member of the Greatest Generation, he served God, family, and his country throughout his life. Wayne served as waist gunner in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII in the 385th B.G., 549th B. Squadron. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a charter member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Preceded in death by parents, Claude and Cora McCammon Byers; sisters, Jane Byers Lincoln and Betty Byers Tauscher; brothers, Henry Byers and John K. Byers. He is survived by his sister, Carol Byers Barling of Corpus Christi, TX; lifelong friend, Jan Cruze, of Knoxville, TN; nieces and nephews who were all "his" children: Karen Lincoln Lee of Highland, CA; Earl Lincoln of Ponce Inlet, FL; Bob Lincoln of Southold, NY; Mary Tauscher Allen of Knoxville, TN; Karl Tauscher of Virginia Beach, VA; John Tauscher of Ft Worth, TX; Paige Byers Dailey of Knoxville, TN; Vickie Bellamy of Kingsport, TN; Will Byers of Black Mtn., NC; Zenda Byers Littreal of Knoxville, TN; Lisa Byers Vaught of Covington, GA; Robin Thurston of Corpus Christi, TX; many great & great-great nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends in the Chapel of Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Hwy., Knoxville, TN, on Saturday, November 2, from 11:00 AM. to 1:00 PM. Funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM with Pastor Jack Wilder officiating. Interment will follow the service at Greenwood Cemetery.
