CUNNINGHAM, NORMA SHIELDS - age 89 of Maryville, Tennessee, born in Cades Cove, passed away April 27, 2005. She was a 50 year member of the First United Methodist Church of Maryville and taught Sunday School there for many years. She was a graduate of Maryville High School and Maryville College and a retired first grade school teacher. She taught at Lanier Elementary, as well as over thirty-five years at Fort Craig and John Sevier Schools. Preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Witt Shields and Francis Oliver Shields; brother, Herman Shields; sisters, Flaura Shields Headrick and Nola Shields.
Her husband of 67 years, Glenn T. Cunningham, predeceased her a little over a year ago and she is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Janis Cunningham of Walland, Tennessee, and Larry and Sarah Cunningham of Decatur, Illinois; grandchildren, Rachel and Scott Garretson, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Kirk and Tammie Cunningham of Maryville, Jeffrey T. Cunningham, of Atlanta, Georgia, Brett S. Cunningham of Maryville, and Julie and Jason Barton of Knoxville; great-grand children, Zachary, Bailey and Molly Garretson, and Kyle and Katie Cunningham; brother, Leon Shields; sisters, Sue Ella S. Fagg and Dorothy S. Lucas, and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and many, many friends. She gave many first graders a wonderful initiation into the educational process and her memory is treasured by her students.
The family will forever appreciate the compassionate and loving care given Dad and Mom at Morningview Village and, most recently, Blount Memorial Transitional Care Center.
The family will receive friends at McCammon-Ammon-Click Funeral Home in Maryville, Tennessee, on Friday, April 29, 2005, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. with the service to follow thereafter. Pastors Brenda Carroll and Larry Carroll will officiate. Special music will be provided by Terry D. Wilson, Brooke Wilson, Dwain Pesterfield, Susan Colclough, Janis Cunningham, Bill Howell, Kirk Cunningham and Ralph Petree. The family and friends will meet at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home in Maryville at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005, to go in procession for a 10:00 a.m. graveside service at Grandview Cemetery. Pallbearers: Kirk T. Cunningham, Brett S. Cunningham, Jeffrey T. Cunningham, Joseph L. Cunningham, Jason Barton, Willard Abbott, Ray ''Buckey'' Colclough, Rex Davis, Calvin Parton and Leon Shields.
