62 Years - Nelson and Ida Nease Williams
By Janice Casey
Ida Williams is the daughter of the late Bernard and Cleta Nease and was raised in the Parrottsville area. Nelson is the son of the late Harry and Mary Lou Williams. He was raised in the Bridgeport/Manning Chapel area.
Nelson and Ida met through a friend on Nelson’s, who was visiting with Ida. Nelson was driving him to these visits. When his friend quit visiting, Nelson began his courtship. They dated for a year; most of their dates was going to the movies. In a year, he asked her to marry him, and on January 20, 1951, they became man and wife. The story of the actual ceremony is an interesting story. They got their marriage license in Cocke County but they wanted to get married in Hamblen County by Preacher Ed Burgin. He performed most of the ceremony in Hamblen County; then he and the young couple drove across Swann’s Bridge into Cocke County where he then pronounced them man and wife. After the ceremony, the newlyweds went to the movies!
Nelson and Ida lived with his parents for awhile. Nelson worked at Butcher and Barkers. In 1953, he went to American Enka where he worked for the next forty years. Ida enjoyed being a stay at home wife and mother for many years until her fourth child went to school. She went to work at Electro-Voice where she worked for 32 years and one day.
The Williamses became the parents of four children: Billy (Louneil); Bobby; Marsha (Tony) Large; and Marilyn (Carroll) Austin. The family is completed with 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
While their children were growing up, Nelson and Ida were very active in their children’s activities. Nelson coached Little League baseball for years while Ida worked the concession stand. These days, she enjoys crocheting. Nelson continues to work on his family’s fourth generation farm in the Bridgeport area. They are faithful members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
When asked to share advice on how to have a long, happy, successful marriage, Ida states, “You must trust each other.”
Nelson is brief and to the point when he says, “Work hard.”
We are happy to honor Nelson and Ida Williams as the Golden Couple for September.
