Edgar Stanley Goins , 88, of Cleveland, passed away at his home peacefully, Tuesday morning, Jan. 8 2013.
" Stan " as he was known by most friends and family was a decorated veteran of World War II and the Korean war.
He became a POW in World War II after being shot down by German forces on a dangerous bombing mission over the Adriatic Sea. Escaping later with the aid of his fellow servicemen, he continued his military career as a commissioned warrant officer in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from service to our country and highly respected by his fellow peers and soldiers.
He was an avid golfer and cherished the camaraderie of his colleagues on the course. He was one of four golfers to play the first round on the newly designed Waterville golf course back nine at its grand opening, and was a lifetime member. He shot his age when he was 72 years old and was one of few golfers in the area to experience firing multiple holes-in-one. He was inducted into the Bradley County Old Timers Hall of Fame for Golf
He not only served our great country and local community with loyalty and faithfulness but also to his wife of 69 years, Elnora Goins , who preceded him in death in 2011.
He was the son of the late Ed and Ada Goins . He was also preceded in death by one son-in-law, Mike Prince of Cleveland; and two sisters: Jessie Cook and Bill Dixon.
He leaves behind one brother, G.B. "Chub" Goins and wife, Rosetta; and two sisters: Grace Smith and Anna Bell Gregg.
He was an exceptional man who loved his wife, two daughters: Linda Prince of Cleveland and Teresa Sharp and husband, Joe, of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren: Chris and Jill Prince, Michele and Brian Trotter, Nicole Prince and Joel and Deanna Prince; a lasting legacy with 13 great-grandchildren: Christian Prince (Bethany), Joseph Prince, Kelly Prince, Titus Osborne, Michaela Walker (Justin), Micah Osborne, Cali Trotter, Jade Morgan, Megan Morgan, Caleb Morgan (Kristin), Samantha Mason, Chase Prince, Caden Prince; and nine great-great- grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors is planned for Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Cemetery, with grandson Chris Prince officiating.
Pallbearers will be members of American Legion post 81. Honorary pallbearers will be his great-grandsons.
The family will receive friends in the parlor of Companion Funeral & Cremation Service on Saturday, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., prior to the graveside service.
