Five are injured in 'serious' Dutch Bottoms wreck
Author: Nelson Morais
NEWPORT-Five occupants were injured in a violent and "serious" single-vehicle crash on Highway 25E in the Dutch Bottoms area, the Tennessee Highway Patrol reported.
Brandon Gibson, 19, of Newport, was driving a four-door Mazda south on Highway 25E when it crossed the center line, traveling across the northbound lanes, then south on an emergency lane, and then leaving the road. The vehicle then crashed into a concrete culvert, where it came to rest, according to a preliminary THP report issued by Sgt. Bill Miller.
Tommy Gibbs, of Morristown, said he was headed north on Highway 25E when he came upon the wreck right soon after it occurred about 12:45 p.m. near the River's Edge development and Rankin Missionary Baptist Church on Rankin Hill Road.
Gibbs said the driver, Gibson, was "hysterical, screaming, and yelling, 'It's my fault! I lost control!'"
Gibbs, who said he had extensive first aid training working in ski patrol in the winter in Maggie Valley, N.C., said he put his CPR training to immediate use, on Atories Cody, 3, who was laying on the ground after someone cut the seat belt straps holding him and Skylar Cody, 6, in the wrecked vehicle.

THP trooper Randy Spurgeon stated in his report that Brandon Lee Gibson, 19, of Newport, was driving a 2003 Mazda 6, headed south on Highway 25E when the vehicle crossed the center line into the northbound lane, then continued down into the ditch line of the northbound lane, then struck a concrete culvert and stopped.
Gibson had four passengers with him in the Mazda. He was injured in the wreck, as were Twanna L. Cody, 32, of Newport; Skylyr Anthony Cody, 5, of Newport; and Wilma J. Gibson, 43, of Newport.
