  [S142] Newspaper Article, 13 Jul 2011. John D . Mathis , 82 of Demotte, Ind., passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Saturday, July 9, 2011, in St. Anthony Hospice, Crown Point, Ind. He was born on July 26, 1928, in Akron, Ohio, and raised in Harriman, the youngest son of the late John and Jesse Mathis . Survivors include his loving wife of 40 years, Ina Pennington Mathis ; six daughters, Linda (James) Neal, Janice (Jon) Huffmaster, Debra (Mike) Runyan, Johann (J. D .) Powell, Gina Caldwell-Kaiser and Terri (Gregg) Green; two sons, Bill Caldwell and John (Kelli) Mathis II; a sister, Lola Farr; and a brother Clayton Mathis . He is also survived by many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son, Brett Caldwell. After moving to Indiana, he worked for Charles Gluth & Sons Roofing Inc. of Hammond, Ind., for more than 50 years. He was known for his craftsmanship and hard work. He loved his wife and children and was proud of all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, at Graceland Cemetery, 1505 E. Morthland Drive, Valparaiso, Ind. Elm Ridge Funeral Home, Muncie, Ind., is in charge of arrangements.
