Esther has been living with her eldest son, John, and his wife Mary Beth Underwood Book in Bridgeport, W. Va., since May 2009. They provided her with amazingly dedicated 24-hour care that included daily outings. She was a member of the St. Ann’s Catholic Church from 1955 until she left West Virginia in 1986 and relocated to Tennessee due to her husband, John’s illness. She remained there and was active in Our Lady of Fatina Catholic Church for 23 years. She taught Catechism and held the office of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Esther was also a food volunteer. She enjoyed serving, gardening, and cooking. Esther loved being with family and caring for children. She always said she wanted to return to the beautiful West Virginia mountains for her final years. Esther loved the Great Smoky Mountains but yearned for, “Those beautiful hills of West Virginia.” She is at peace now, united with the Jesus she loved and the family that has departed.
