Jack E. "Sheriff" Smith, 95, of Hazelwood, Haywood County, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2013.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years Rhoda Clark Smith and his parents Vicie Emmaline Russell Smith and Billie Smith.
He is survived by four children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Jack had many family ties and long-time friends in Cocke County.
He was a World War II Veteran who landed at Omaha Beach. He also fought in the Battles of St. Lo and Mortain, the assault at the Siegfriend Line, and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of Company H, 120th Regiment, 30th Infantry Division - "Old Hickory." Historians of the European Theatre of Operations rate the 30th as the number one outstanding division in World War II.
The family will receive family and friends at Garrett Funeral Home, 460 N. Main St., Waynesville, North Carolina, on Saturday, July 27, 2013, from 1:00--3:00 p.m. with services beginning at 3:00 p.m.
