- [S147] Find a Grave, (Memorial: 58868716).
James was a private in Company A of the 64th North Carolina Infantry (Confederate). His unit surrendered in what James believed was an ignominious fashion at Cumberland Gap, and James spent most of the war in perhaps the most notorious Union prison camp, Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois.
At the camp, he was stabbed in the back with a bayonet for picking up a blanket and suffered for the rest of his life for it, becoming partially paralyzed. He wrote that he was in the last group ever released from Camp Douglas, watching the gates close for the last time.
The train carrying him back home to North Carolina was so crowded that he road on top of it much of the way.
