McCARTER, MARK LOWRY - age 84, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at St. Mary's Residential Hospice. He was born on the 4th of July, 1916, in Piedmont, Jefferson County, Tenn. Mr. McCarter was an active member of First Baptist Church on Main Street for many years. A Veteran of World War II, having served with the U. S. Army, Company D, 66th Ordinance Battalion at Ft. Dix and 3404th Ordinance Battalion in Iceland. Employed for many years by Tennessee Coach Co., and later Trailways Bus Lines, from which he retired. He was an avid student of Tennessee and Civil War History, and was proud of his Southern Highlander Heritage. A member of Charles McKinney Lodge and American Legion Post #2, for more than 50 years. Preceded in death by his father, Dr. Thomas L. McCarter; mother, Mary Meadows McCarter; brother, Chauncey D. McCarter, and beloved first wife, Anna Collins McCarter.
Survivors: devoted wife, Willie Mae Owens Collins McCarter; son, Stephen L. McCarter; step daughter, Patricia Collins Ericson and her children, Bradley M. Fairris and Alicia G. Petrone; four step great-grandchildren, Avery and Hannah Petrone, Schuylar and Caleb Fairris; special sister-in-law, Francis R. McCarter, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services 7 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Berry Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. George Gilbert officiating. Interment 10 a.m. Saturday at the National Cemetery with Military Honors by the East Tennessee Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests, memorial donations be made to the East Tennessee Historical Society.
