Blanche McCarter Parton, 91, of Gatlinburg, passed away on Wednesday, September 21, 2011. She was born in the Sugarlands Area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park June 6, 1920.
Her early years were spent roaming the mountains with her brothers and then later she moved into Gatlinburg at the establishment of the GSMNP. In Gatlinburg she worked with her husband in various restaurant ventures, was active in the community, and always looked to make a difference by helping others. After a short stay in the Washington D.C. area, she moved backed to Gatlinburg and worked until retirement at Tennessee State Bank. Her later years were spent with grandchildren; making “peppermint cakes” for birthdays, chocolate pies for nieces and nephews, and finding 4 leaf clovers where none were to be seen. She spent her life looking for the good in people and sharing her love of the mountains with all who cared to listen. She was accepting of all and lived her life in admirable & impeccable service to others. Whether you knew her as Blanche, Mrs. Parton, or Granny, you were glad to have spent time with one of the few remaining original and genuine women of the mountains.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Gatlinburg and had served as a Sunday School teacher during the many years she attended faithfully.
She was preceded in her death by husband, Rex Parton; daughter, Lana Parton: Father, Mack McCarter & Mother, Cora; Son in Law, Elwood “Woody” Soehn Sr., & 17 siblings.
Survivors are her daughter: Sammy Soehn, sons and daughters-in-laws: Elwood R. “Woody Soehn, Jr. and wife Terri, Heath Soehn and wife Dana; grandchildren: Davis and Ethan Soehn, Isaac, Emily, and Ella Blankenship; Grant and Garrett Soehn; and several nieces and nephews as well as friends & acquaintances the world over.
A memorial service will be held Sunday September 25, 2011. Family will receive friends at 1:30 and a service will follow at 2:30; Rev. Larry Burcham officiating. Following the service, ashes will be placed by family in the Elkmont cemetery, at her husband Rex’s side.
