Pastor Dewey Rex Norton , age 68 , of Newport , born on June 8 , 1947 , in Madison County , North Carolina , went home to be with his Lord on Monday afternoon, January 25, 2016, at his home with his family by his side after a long illness.
He was pastor of Barnes Valley Baptist Church for twenty-six years. He loved preaching the gospel of Christ and winning souls to the Lord.
Pastor Norton was preceded in death by his parents Hubert and Kate Norton , brothers Kenny Norton and William Edward Norton , and father- in -law and mother- in -law Jay and Eulala Greene.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years Irene Greene Norton of the home; son Rex Jay (Joyce) Norton of Cosby; daughter Schanell Norton (Ricky) Sprouse of Hartford; grandson Tyler Norton and girlfriend Katie Myers of Cosby; granddaughters Naomi Sprouse, Ruth Sprouse, and Lilly Sprouse, all of Hartford; sister Barbara Ford; brother Ray (Sherry) Norton and sisters- in -law Brenda Norton , all of Knoxville; and Kathy Norton of Sweetwarter; brother- in -law Paul (Reba) Sawyer of Hot Springs; brother- in -law and sister- in -law Rev. James (Eva) Shetley of Thomasville, North Carolina .
The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice, especially Charlie Grooms, Brother Glenn Bradley, Jill Ritchey, and Ashley Weeks. They also want to thank Dr. Michael Hood for all his care. A special 'Thank you' goes to the Millers, Jackie Leatherwood, and friends at Greystone Lodge in Gatlinburg. Thank you to his preaching brothers in Christ and his beloved church members at Barnes Valley Baptist Church, special friends Mike and Charlene Payne of Panther Creek, North Carolina , brother Joe Perkins of Thomasville, North Carolina , and special cousin Buddy Norton of Knoxville.
The funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening, January 30, 2016, at Costner-Maloy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rex Jay Norton , Rev. Ricky Lee Sprouse, Rev. Jerry Nelson, and Rev. John Henderson officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00—6:00 p.m. prior to the funeral.
Family and friends will meet at 1:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon, January 31, 2016, at Zion Cemetery in Hot Springs, North Carolina for the 2:00 p.m. graveside service with Rev. James Shetley officiating.
