Authorities probe New Year's Eve shooting
EDWINA-Friday night ended tragically for one family in the Edwina community. At approximately 7:15 p.m. New Years Eve, Homer James, 56, dialed 911 and requested an officer to assist him with his son Jake James, 24, at 515 James Branch Road.
By the time officers arrived, Jake James had reportedly been shot in the head with a .38 caliber pistol. They also found two arrows that had struck the exterior of the house and evidence that the door had been kicked in.
According to Cocke County Sheriff's Department Chief Detective Robert Caldwell, the father stated that Jake James had shot two arrows at the house and kicked in the door.
Jake James's body was found inside the house in the farthest room from the door.
"We know what happened. Everything was recorded by the call to 911 dispatch," said Caldwell.
An autopsy was ordered and was performed Monday, Caldwell reported, adding that toxicology had been sent to a lab to determine whether any kind of drug or alcohol was present in the deceased's system.
Caldwell said it will take several months to get the results of the toxicology report.
Jake James had been arrested on December 16 in connection with an alleged assault, during which James's cousin, Curtis James, 42, of Cosby, had been shot in the leg. James was free on bond at the time of the New Year's Eve shooting.
No charges have been filed in this case, however Caldwell said the investigation is continuing.
The Cocke County Sheriffs department is being assisted by The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
"All facts will be presented to the DA," he said.
