A member of First Christian Church, "Hoyt" served with the United States Coast Guard in the South Pacific during WWII. While working at Alcoa for 40 years he served as West Plant Union "309" Chairman for 22 years before retiring in 1984. He was a member of Maryville Freemason Lodge 719. Survived by his loving wife of 63 years Polly, son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Minerva Garland, daughter, Vickey Garland, grandsons, Jaimie Garcia, Sam Cano, great-grandsons, Jaizac, Jaiden, Jaicee Garcia , Noah Cano, brother & sister-in-law, Paul & Sara Garland, sisters, Lola Hall, Eloise Dailey, AnnaMae Swaney, Katherine Mahan, sisters & brothers-in-law, Josephine & Ralph Painter, Corrine & Howard Atchley, brother-in-law Jim Edwards, brother-in-law & sister-in-law, Carl & Ivalee Boring. Preceded in death by parents, Harve & Martha Garland, step-mother, Inis Garland, brothers & sisters-in-law, Danie & RuthMary, Johnny & Audine, Virgil & Deliah, sisters, Margie Edwards, Hazel Ivalene Garland, brother, Charles, brothers-in-law, Fred Hall, Marion Dailey, Harold Swaney, Raymond Mahan.
