He was a member of Happy Valley Missionary Baptist Church, retired from Alcoa, and a veteran of the U. S. Navy. He was a loving husband, father, and Papaw. He was preceded in death by his son, Austin Ned Payne, Jr.; parents, Joel and Mary Payne; brothers, Oliver and J. D. Payne; and sisters, Fern Payne, Faye Boring, and Geneva Morton. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Christine Payne; daughters and son-in-law, Wanda Williams of Ahoskie, NC and Vickie and Darryl Downey of Maryville; step-children and spouses, Danny and Souix Boone and Robert and Tammi Boone all of Maryville and Judy Boone of Pensacola, FL; grandchildren and spouses, Brian and Ashley Downey of Columbia, TN, Cindy and Will Harrell of Greenville, NC, Greg Williams of Ahoskie, NC, and Olivia Boone of Maryville; great-grandchildren, Alex and Austin Harrell and Noah and Keely Downey; sister, Jeanette Whitehead; brother, Vance Payne; special sister-in-law, Judy Payne; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at Miller Funeral Home Magnolia Chapel, Rev. Beecher Whitehead officiating. Family and friends will gather 11:00 AM Wednesday at Happy Valley Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery for the interment.
