QUARLES , JAMES C., JR. - age 78 of Jefferson City, passed away march 7, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospice Center in Halls after a lingering illness. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jefferson City where he served as usher for many years. He was retired from ASCARCO as chief surveyor. He enjoyed his work as well as bowling and playing golf and did each with great enthusiasm until his health prevented it. He served in the US Army during World War II with the 756th Tank Battalion as a gunner, driver, and then tank commander. He was in the European Theater of War serving in Africa, Italy, Germany, France, and Austria. He was wounded twice in Germany and once in Italy receiving the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters. Mr. Quarles also receive the Bronze Star, European African Middle Eastern Service Medial with Silver Star and Bronze Arrowhead, and the French Citation Croix De Guerre. One of his true joys was attending Army reunions. Preceded in death by a son, James (Jimmy) C. Quarles , III; parents, James C. Sr., and Cora Walker Quarles ; a sister, Frances Sydnor. Survivors include his wife of fifty-four years, Mary Margaret Long Quarles and a son, Richard Alan Quarles ; five grandchildren, Brian, Barry, Jonathan, Jennifer, and Courtney; and six great grandchildren; brothers and sisters in law, Harold and Dorothy, Keith and Katherine all of Jefferson City, Dwight and Sue of Burleson, Texas; sisters and brothers in law, Barbara and Bill Craig of Jefferson City and Wilma and Jim Frazier of Marietta, Ga.; several nieces and nephews also survive Mr. Quarles . Funeral services will be Sunday, March 10, at 3 p.m. from the Farrar Funeral Home Chapel in Jefferson City with Reverend Paul Brewer and Jim Dampier officiating. Interment to follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens with military honors by the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. Family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Farrar Funeral in Jefferson City. Family request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Inc. Woodholme Medical Building Suite 515, 1838 Greene Tree Rd., Baltimore, Md. 21208.
