Hugh Lunsford : Former Journal photographer dies
Hugh Lunsford , a former chief photographer for the Knoxville Journal, died Monday at University of Tennessee Medical center. He was 81.
Mr. Lunsford had struggled with emphysema and congestive heart failure, his son, Ben Lunsford , said.
"Christmas Day his lungs just started to die out," Ben Lunsford said.
"He was going to wait until after Christmas, then go to the hospital. He always did his best for the family."
Ben Lunsford said his father served in the Navy during World War II. He said Mr. Lunsford was asked to stay in the Navy and teach radar but he was eager to return to his family. Mr. Lunsford lived in the Knoxville area except during his time in the Navy.
Mr. Lunsford joined the Knoxville Journal in 1946.
"He didn't just take photographs, he painted a picture," said Ben Byrd, a former co-worker of Mr. Lunsford 's. "You could always count on Hugh ."
Byrd, a former sports editor for the Journal, said he remembers an acclaimed photo Mr. Lunsford took at a murder scene of a grandmother holding a crying child.
Charlie Daniel, News Sentinel cartoonist, worked with Mr. Lunsford at the Journal from 1958 until the Journal's close at the end of 1991.
"He took pictures sort of like Norman Rockwell's paintings," Daniel said.
Ben Lunsford said his father hung on his wall a photo he took of former President Richard Nixon. Nixon sent the framed and autographed copy to him with a thank-you note.
Byrd also remarked on his long personal friendship with Mr. Lunsford .
"He was just always a friendly, affable, fun-loving guy," Byrd said. "He was a wonderful friend."
Mr. Lunsford celebrated his 62nd wedding anniversary with his wife, Amy, in October. Ben Lunsford said despite his father's declining health, "He tried to take really good care of my mom. … He told me he'd loved her since he was 12 years old."
Mr. Lunsford was a member of Fort Hill Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Highway. A funeral service will follow. There will be a graveside service 11 a.m. Friday at Woodlawn Cemetery, 4500 Woodlawn Pike.
