Dr. Howard V. Brabson, age 87, of Ann Arbor, Mich., formerly of Knoxville, peacefully passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013. He was a retired professor at the University of Michigan and president emeritus of the National Association of Black Social Workers. Preceded in death by his father, Alfred L. Jones, Jr.; mother, Fannie R. Brabson; and wife, Rudiene Houston. Funeral service will be Saturday, January 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Student Parish, 331 Thompson St., Ann Arbor, Mich., 48104. Dr. Howard V. Brabson, age 87, of Ann Arbor, Michigan made his transition on New Year's Day, after a lengthy illness, and now reaps the reward of eternal life with God our Father in his Heavenly Kingdom. Dr. Brabson was born on September 18, 1925, in Knoxville, Tennessee, the only child of Fannie Brabson Burroughs (deceased). He received his BS degree from the College of the Ozarks in 1957, and his MSW and DSW degrees from Catholic University of America in 1962 and 1975, respectively. Dr. Brabson, Associate Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan and President Emeritus of the National Association of Black Social Workers, was acclaimed for his distinguished military (United States Army) and professional career. In addition to the recognition he achieved at the University of Michigan (1969-1991) for his leadership, teaching talents, curriculum development, and mentoring of black students and undergraduate athletes, Dr. Brabson has been honored nationally for his humanitarianism and community service. Lovingly referred to as "Howard," Dr. Brabson leaves to celebrate his life, a family of cousins, in addition to a host of friends, colleagues, students, and mentees (his "kids"), who make up his vast extended family. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary Student Parish, 331 Thompson Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall (lower level) immediately following the service.
