ASKEW , CHARLES EUGENE, May 04, 1920 - July 10, 2007 Charles Eugene (Gene) Askew was born in Henry County, Ga., the son of the late Newt Glass Askew and Caroline Waldon Askew . Mr. Askew grew up in Macon, Georgia, and graduated from Emory University in Atlanta. Mr. Askew earned the Master of Divinity degree from Yale Divinity School and Candler School of Theology, Emory, where he was the recipient of the Miller Scholarship. He studied for his doctorate at Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Ordained in the ministry of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches, he ministered to churches in New York State, Illinois, Wisconsin and Texas. Some major concerns of Gene Askew 's ministry were that every citizen should have the right to vote and that every child should have the right to an education equal that of any other child in the community. Mr. Askew studied voice throughout his life and was soloist at Emory and Yale. As a member of the New York City Opera Co. he toured for a year in The Gypsy Baron by Johann Strauss II. A life-long believer in physical fitness, he completed 88 marathons, 20 of them in Boston. He was married for 58 years to Lida Walker of Atlanta. He is survived by his wife, Lida ; his five children, Timothy Weigle Askew , Rebecca Askew Starobin, Katherine Constant Askew , Allegra Faith Askew , and Pamela Lakshmi Askew ; and his four grandchildren: Robert J. Starobin, Allegra Rose Starobin, Maximillian Eugene Gerl and Truitte Rose Askew . Mr. Askew chose to donate his body for medical research through the Life Legacy Foundation's Nationwide Medical Research and Education Donor Program. Gene Askew was a man who tried to be the best person it was possible for him to be. He accomplished many good things in his life. He loved his wife and taught the best that he knew to his children. He was loved and will be missed by many.
