John Overholt to present Christmas concert Sunday
John I. Overholt of Newport, a senior vocal performance major at East Tennessee State University, will perform a concert of sacred Christmas music at English Mountain Christian Church (Cosby Hwy. at Lewis Road) on Sunday, December 23, at 5 p.m.
Overholt will graduate from ETSU with the degree, Bachelor of Music, in May, 2013, and will continue his studies in vocal performance at either the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, or the College-Conservatory of Music, The University of Cincinnati.
At ETSU, John studies voice with Professor Karen Smith and is a former student of Dr. Thomas Jenrette, Emeritus Professor of Music. John has sung many leading roles in the ETSU Opera Productions and has traveled around the world with the ETSU Chorale for several years.
John is the son of Joe and Charlotte Overholt of Newport and is a graduate of Cocke County High School where he sang in the choir and played in the band. He was selected by competitive audition to perform in the Tennessee Music Educators Association All-State Choir for three years.
Sunday’s program of sacred Christmas music will include a setting of Schubert’s “Ave Maria,” an arrangement of Bach’s “Prelude in C Major” by Charles Gounod, and John Ness Beck’s arrangement of “There’s a Song in the Air.” The program will conclude with the ever-popular “The Lord’s Prayer” by Albert Malotte.
Overholt will be accompanied by Dr. Benjamin Caton, Professor of Music in the Department of Music at East Tennessee State University. While growing up in Newport, Caton, son of the late Ben D. and Edna Caton, studied piano with the late Kathryn W. Bauman and played trombone in the CCHS Band under the direction of the late Bob Mooty. Currently Caton serves as president of Music Teachers National Association, an organization of some 22,000 music teachers across America.
Pastor Jonathan Westerfield extends a warm welcome to everyone to come worship and be inspired by this outstanding up-and-coming young artist. The event is free and open to the public.
