ROSE HILL, Va. - Garry Ely, 62, passed away Monday, October 20, 2008, in a car accident in Jackson County, N.C.
He was employed at the Newfound Lodge in Cherokee, N. C., at the time of his death. He had previously worked in restaurant management and landscaping. He also was the owner of the former Cumberland Antique Center near Rose Hill, Va.
He was a graduate of Thomas Walker High School, where he excelled as band major under the leadership of David Tipton. He attended East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn., performing in several theatrical roles and folk dance events. He later served in the United States Army in Hawaii. He was a master storyteller and talented cook who loved to entertain family and friends.
Preceding in death were his mother, Virginia Ferne Davis Lambdin ; an aunt, Jean Davis Hatfield; and two uncles, James Davis and Glenn Davis . His long-time friend, Thomas Jaros of Cherokee, N.C., also passed away in the accident.
Surviving are two uncles: Paul Davis and wife, Mary of Rose Hill, and Claude Davis and wife, Mildred of Pennington Gap, Va.; special friend, Joey Eldridge and Joey's daughter, Carristen, both of Tallahassee, Fla.; step-father, Glenn Lambdin of Alcoa, Tenn.; step-sister, Mrs. Jo Greene and husband, Doug all of Alcoa, Tenn.; special nephews, Dustin and Westin Greene; special niece, Elizabeth Greene.
He was beloved by many cousins in Lee County, Va., and elsewhere.
The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Friday at Silver Leaf Baptist Church in Rose Hill.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Silver Leaf Baptist Church with the Rev. Westin Greene officiating.
Burial will follow in Silver Leaf Cemetery in Rose Hill.
