Max E. Ogle obituary
- [S142] Newspaper Article, Decatur Daily (AL), 11 Mar 2006.
Funeral for Hobert Harold Ogle Jr., 81, of Decatur will be today, March 11, 2006, at 3 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Rob Jackson officiating.
Burial will be in East Lawrence Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be today from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Ogle, who died Thursday, March 9, 2006, at his residence, was born July 10, 1924, in Knoxville to Hobert Harold Ogle Sr. and Julia Maples Ogle, who preceded him in death. He was the eldest son and served in the U.S. Navy for eight years during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He had a brief career in minor league baseball before becoming a mechanical engineer in Oak Ridge, Tenn. In 1957, the family moved to Decatur where he became an aeronautical engineer at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville. Mr. Ogle spent the rest of his career at Marshall Space Flight Center receiving commendation for his work on the original Skylab.
The Ogle family was active in the life and ministry of Central Baptist Church. Mr. Ogle taught youth for more than 30 years, in addition to playing and coaching church athletics. For more than 25 years, he worked with his wife, Naomi, to prepare and serve meals for church camps and regular church suppers, and he traveled with numerous church mission teams. He enjoyed constructing everything from church floats for the annual Christmas parade to framework for the Living Christmas Tree. He was a man of quiet faith and great integrity.
Even as his health declined, he never lost his wonderful sense of humor and his enjoyment of people and pets. Adored by all the family dogs through the years, he shared a special bond with Cricket, who slept on his hospital bed and rode in his lap in his wheelchair. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Charles Prickett and his staff; caregivers, Dot Hamilton and Clarence Jones; Hospice; Louise; Judy and Charlie Gover; Betty Teague; Dr. Felton Davenport; and the friends and family who brightened his life with their visits, food, flowers and messages of encouragement when he was homebound.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Naomi Ogle; one daughter, Glinda Blackshear and her husband, Alan, of Tuscaloosa; one son, David Ogle and his wife, Patsy, of Auburn; three grandchildren, Sara Lavallee, Dan Ogle and Joy Ogle; two great-grandchildren, Patrick Eaddy and Jacob Lavallee; three brothers, Carroll Ogle of Cary, N.C., Max Ogle of Knoxville, Tenn., and Earl Ogle of Sun City West, Ariz.; one sister, Sue Vandegriff of Henderson, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Dan Ogle, Jordan Oliver, Charlie Gover, David Breland, Ken Nelson and Alan Blackshear.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central Baptist Church Building Fund or Hospice of the Valley.
