Melvin Earl Minger, of Talent, Ore., peacefully went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at his home surrounded by loved ones. Earl was born in 1922, in Millville, Iowa to Raymond and Hazel Minger.
Earl lived in the Rogue Valley since the 1940s. He was an expert mechanic who worked for Courtesy Chevrolet in Medford and later for Jackson County in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor who served the Navy in WWII on the USS Pennsylvania and other ships. Earl was stationed in post-war Japan, where duties included patrolling Hiroshima and helping in the reconstruction of Japan. He belonged to the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Earl was a devoted Christian who supported a number of churches and did humanitarian work, including disaster relief construction in Central America. Helping and supporting others was always a top priority. Other activities included walking his dog, climbing mountains, hiking, hunting, fishing, visiting friends and family, and fixing anything.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Minger, whom he married in 2002; children, Marie Brochier, of Boise, Idaho, Temple Hewett, of Portland, Ore., Earlene Martinez, of Ashland, Ore., and David Minger, of Portland, Ore.; sister, Irene Millard, of Medford, Ore., brother, Raymond Minger, of Brookings, Ore.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and several step-children and grandchildren.
Earl was preceded in death by his beloved son, Robert Minger; and former spouses, Ruth Minger and Dottie Minger; as well as siblings, Lono Guilfoyle, Irma Johnson, Alton Minger, Clarence Minger, Clyde Minger; and his parents, Ray and Hazel Minger.
On Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, there will be a memorial service at 1:00 p.m., followed by reception at 2:00 p.m. at Valley Bible Fellowship, 616 South Pacific Hwy., Talent, OR (541-535-6322) with Pastor Bob Huntoon officiating.
