Jimmy Dale Gowan, age 67, of Newport, passed away Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at his home. He served 2 years in the Peace Corps, retired from Cocke County Sheriff’s Department, were he served 25 years as corrections officer, and was a former member of the Newport Rescue Squad. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Juanita Gowan; brother, Leslie Gowan and sisters, Trula Lamb and Elizabeth Gowan. He is survived by his wife Margaret Gowan of Newport; sons, Raymond Holt of Newport, Leon Holt of South Carolina, Richard Holt of Newport, David Holt of Greeneville; daughters, Melissa Gowan of Newport, Mary Ann Owenby of Parrottsville and Jo Ann Fine of Newport; twelve grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Floyd Gowan Jr, of Newport, Janette Kinder of Newport, Lonnie Gowan of Knoxville, Joyce Christian of Lenoir City, Jolena Gibson of Athens and Betty Teague of North Carolina; also nieces, nephews, other family and friends. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm -7:00 pm Friday, December 4, 2015 with funeral services following at 7:00 pm in Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with Caleb Young officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 871 N Weisgarber Road, Knoxville, TN 37909.
