Mildred Brown Coleman , a loving, caring, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend-was born March 12, 1924 in La Follette, Tenn. She was the daughter of the late William Henry Edgar and Lucy Mabel Brown and the youngest of four daughters. She departed this life on Tuesday, March 23, 2010.
She was baptized into the Mount Zion Baptist Church where she was active in the total church program until leaving for college in 1941. After moving to Pine Bluff she joined Faith Presbyterian Church.
She attended Knoxville College where she was elected Miss Knoxville College her senior year. She was extremely active throughout her collegiate years being a member of several organizations including the German Society, Delta Theta Mathematics Club, the Photography Club, and the Coleridge-Taylor Chorus. She graduated from Knoxville College in 1945 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. Following graduation, Mildred began teaching at Tuskegee Institute High School.
In Sept. 1946, Mildred was married to Lennis Vernon Coleman , Sr., her college sweetheart. To this union four children were born; Lennis Sr. and two children, Lennis , Jr. and Brenda preceded her in death.
In 1947, she and her family moved to Tuscaloosa, Ala. where she taught in the Physical Education Department at Stillman College. She then pursued her Master's degree at Springfield College, Springfield, Mass. and was awarded her degree in 1955. She continued working at Stillman College until 1962, when she resigned to relocate to Knoxville, Tenn. There she taught Math at Vine Junior High School until 1964, when opportunity beckoned the Coleman 's to St. Louis, Mo. In St. Louis, she taught in the St. Louis Public Schools. In 1966, she accepted a teaching position at Arkansas AM&N College in Pine Bluff, Ark.
Her professional affiliations include memberships in Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity, South Arkansas Health System Agency, and National Association of University Women.
Survivors include two daughters, Dr. Sheila Lynne Coleman -Denton and Yvette Denise Lovett; three grandchildren, Kinshasa Zaire Hawkins, Marius Kofi' Jarreau Coleman Denton, and Kia Shatar Coleman .
Visitation will be today at Christian Way Funeral Home from 4-6 p.m.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 29, 2010 at Faith Presbyterian Church .
Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, the Bellwood Section Christian Way Funeral Home.
